Rumours of a Quidditch movie!

It was only a few weeks ago, JK Rowling surprised the world and caused controversy over her decision to write the script and give permission for the go ahead of a new movie set in the Wizarding Universe. Fantastical Beasts And Where To Find Them has been taken on by Warner Bros for a big-screen adaption of the fictional book from Harry Pottters Wizarding Universe. But rumours of further films were rife today after website Bleeding Cool suggest Warner Bros has been collecting further Potter trademarks including that of Quidditch, hinting that an adaptation could be on the cards! Quidditch Through The Ages is another book for Students from the Wizarding world. The studio has also trademarked the name of quidditch expert Kennilworthy Whisp, the fictional author, as well as team names Wimbourne Wasps, Chudley Cannons and Kenmare Kestrels.

JK Rowling has stated that she is adapting the "magizoology" compendium read by Harry Potter during his first year at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry for a range of new adventures. It is also possible that Tales of Beedle The Bard may be adapted also. There has been no official confirmation from Warner Bros.

Malham Cove: A Prehistoric Waterfall

This weekend, amongst the nights out and hangovers I managed to get out and about into the lovely countryside of the Yorkshire dales. Now there is a huge expanse of countryside in the dales sculpted by the rivers and past glaciers along with limestone beds that underlay a large area. This has meant there are hundreds of caves and waterfalls that flow down off the hills. Ingleton is famous for its stunning waterfalls, but just a few miles away there is something which is even more spectacular. Now this feature probably gets overshadowed from the nearby towns of Settle, Ingleton and Skipton but Malham Cove is definitely something that you have to see!

Now Malham Cove sounds like it is something on the coast, but it is probably one of the only places that is called a cove but is not actually at the sea! This feature found in Malhamdale, just one kilometre north of the Village of Malham, with its cafes, coffee shops, pubs, tourist information and farm shops. The cove itself is actually made from the underlying Limestone rocks and has been sculpted into a massive cliff face at the head of a valley with limestone pavements found above. The calcium with the limestone means that the huge cliff is white. The cliff reaches 80m in height and 300m wide.

Its a spectacular site as you walk up the valley right up to the foot of cliff. A small river flows from cracks at the bottom of the cliff from a cavernous pathway which filters through the limestone beds. Their is many walks around this area and the views are spectacular, over 400 stone steps guide you up to the top of the cliff side.

This is where you will find the limestone pavements. Layers of irregular shaped beds of rock laid down millions of years ago. The flow of water has cut grooves and patterns into the beds and can at times be slippy along with its irregularity meaning that sturdy walking boots are recommended! The edge of the cliff is not fenced off so stay back! Many climbers can be seen taking on the cliff face.

The view from the top is fantastic looking down the valley towards Malham where there is a large car park, toilet and visitors centre. Free parking can also be found if you are lucky! There are B&Bs and a local campsite too.
The main walk takes you from the top of the cove down another valley where waterfalls and caves can be found before it brings you back into the village. There is also the option of visiting Gordale Scar a huge ravine with steep cliffs and waterfalls.

The cliff face formed from a large waterfall fed by a glacier during the last Ice Age. It was towards the end of the Ice Age when temperatures were increasing and the ice sheets retreating, but the ground was still permanently frozen meaning that meltwater formed a huge river creating the valley and what would have been a huge waterfall, taller than Niagra falls today! Water now travels down through a complex cave system thought to begin forming over 50,000 years ago. Heavy rain and floodwater is swallowed by the cave system before it reaches the edge; but the last recorded time water came over the edge of the cove was in the early 19th Century during a period of heavy rain.

Malham Cove appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) as one of the places Harry and Hermione travel to with their tent.

Loverly place, definitely worth a visit!

IPCC finds humans are dominant cause of recent climate change

The UN panel has issued part one of its 60 year update on the state of the Earths climate. The IPCC has revealed that there is 95% certainty that humans are the dominant cause of climate change since the 1950s.

We are seeing changes in the climate system unprecedented in records spanning hundreds of years.

Here are some of the main points and findings:

GREENHOUSE GASES

The atmospheric concentration of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) has increased by 40% since pre-industrial times. And the mean rates of rise in concentrations of CO2, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N20) in the last 100 years are "with very high confidence" unprecedented in the last 22,000 years, the authors say.

TEMPERATURE

The period from 1983-2012 in the Northern Hemisphere was likely the warmest 30-year period of the last 1,400 years. Temperatures are set to continue to rise, influenced by greenhouse gases.

OCEANS

In addition, it is "virtually certain" that the upper 700m of the Earth's oceans have warmed during the period from 1971 and 2010. The deep ocean, below 3,000m in depth, "likely" warmed between 1992 and 2005, with the largest warming observed in the Southern Ocean.

Waters are expected to rise by between 26cm and 82cm, dependant on greenhouse emissions this century. It will be a much faster rate than seen in previous decades and may cause coastal flooding and erosion.

Problems

There remain inconsistencies between observed changes in the climate system and the conditions simulated by computers and many scientists have different theories and believe of different and sometimes opposing sequential patterns.

The slowdown in warming since 1998 could be due to unpredictable variability in the climate and over-sensitive responses to greenhouse gases in some climate models.

Overall, it can be seen that the climate is far more complex than first thought and it is definitely hard to predict and model.

There are still things being discussed currently and the Impacts and Mitigation methods for what is predicted will be discussed next year by the IPCC.

Island forms off the coast of Pakistan after Powerful Earthquake

Pakistan has been hit by a powerful earthquake where at least 250 people have been killed. The earthquake struck in the Balochistan province on Tuesday at a depth of 20km at magnitude of 7.7. It has been reported that entire villages are said to have been flattened with thousands spending the night in the open. The area is prone to earthquakes but has little in the way of mitigation methods with many of the buildings made out of poor materials which cannot withstand the earthquakes. The emergency services are struggling to cope with all injuries with the military responding also to the crisis.

After the quake a small island has been reported to have appeared off the coast near Gwadar with people rushing to the beach to see it.

During an earthquake there is sometimes deformation of the crust, which may cause an uprising of land. This 600m long, 100m and 20m high island has believed to have formed from a "mud volcano." Richard Luckett a seismologist from BGS has stated that is unusual but not uncommon. He added that there are numerous "mud volcanoes" along this coast with a similar island seen form after a previous earthquake. He believes they form when softer, muddier rock underlays solid rock and when stresses are released through an earthquake, the cap is released and the softer rock rises upwards. He stated that the previous island seen was washed away by the rain and ocean after about a month or two.

In October 2005 some 73,000 people were killed in 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake in Northern Pakistan.

Breath of Warm Weather for the Weekend

This weekend see's a brief respite to the stormy cool weather we have experiencing over the last few weeks. We though we may have seen the end of summery weather but this weekend sees a breath of warm air coming up from the continent. Temperatures will rise into the high teens to low twenties from Saturday with drier weather seen from tomorrow. There may be periods of sunshine also, especially into Saturday and Sunday with an odd shower possible. The Jetstream has pushed Northwards in what some scientists believe has been because of a tropical storm in the Atlantic.

This has meant that high pressure can push up from the continent bringing drier and settled weather. It looks like it may continue into next week also with temperatures possibly rising further! So don't pack away those summer shorts just yet! :)

Freshers Week

So across the country many people will be gearing up / recovering from their first week of University! FRESHERS WEEK

A crazy week of making friends, freshers fairs, burning food, flat party's, house wars, hangovers, freshers flu and lots and lots of alcohol.... (for most)

My freshers week was pretty much that! Now I sound old... my freshers week in first year was 2009! It really doesn't feel that long ago, but the fact is, is that it actually is now....

Fancy Dress is definitely something that happens in Freshers!
So take as much as you have and buy as much you can afford!
So it all started when I arrived collected my key and emptied the jam packed car into my empty room on campus. After a full unpack and a drawer of the fridge/freezer and cupboards claimed, it was time to say good bye to the family, which wasn't to hard on my side but for a caring loving parent yes. So my first tip, is that don't freak out if you're parents get very teary as they most likely will.

Then it was onto meeting the flat mates, when I arrived there was a lot of random people around the flat. After managing to get a few names which you will forget almost straight away there maybe others in the flat that aren't actually flatmates! When I arrived there was 3 people in the kitchen who weren't even in my college, to add to my confusion and they were saying hello to a friend who was a flatmate. So another pointer is that you will meet a lot of people in you're first week, you will most likely forget everyones name for the first few weeks and there will be a lot of people you probably won't see again.

Your university will already have events planned so get involved and go to them all.
Go say hello to everyone in other flats in your house.

We ended up having all house residents in our flat on White T Shirt Rave!
(PS when using markers to write on Tshirts- be warned is likely to be all over your skin by the end of the night!)
Its also quite good to go and meet the people in the surrounding flats, as if your flatmates don't turn out to be very sociable or the nicest of people its always good having friends close by. You will make lots more friends from your course and you will have a lot more in common, but you wont necessarily meet them straight away.

Your university may have a freshers ball so
a good excuse to get dressed up!
Its important to remember that everyone is in the same boat and that you will have those awkward moments around the table where conversation might just stop. So just fill it with some random question to keep it going! Maybe buy a doorstop to keep you're door open when others are in to keep that conversation flowing. This week this new crew is going to be sticking together like glue! You will find that after the first week everyone will part their ways a bit more but you'll still have some great nights out!

Freshers week will likely be an expensive one, joining societies and eating out, takeaways and all those nights out, so budgeting your way through it wont really work. You will probably find that you spend half your first term loan in the first week! But hey, its only first year freshers once!
Make your room as homely as you can. My room was full of posters after freshers week
PS use White Tac on the walls it is much easier to get off the walls and reduce damage so you can get your deposit back!
Collect as much stuff from your uni as you can and fill your room. Mine in third year was jam packed!

Its also good to note that you don't have to do things you don't want to. You don't have to fancy dress up, you don't have to go out every night, its good to take a night off and just relax with your flatmates and laugh over the previous nights events.

I would highly recommend joining a society, one of my biggest regrets is not doing much in the first year, and you might hear the lecturers saying that there will be no time for societies then don't listen. First year is the easiest and you haven't got as much work as you do in the others so go and join as much as you can! Its another great way of making another group of friends and there is so much out there from sports to other extreme sports, gaming societies, baking ,dancing, and even Harry Potter and Quidditch clubs!

Your first meal that you don't burn is always the best.
Start with something easy! Chicken wraps are always good!
Share meals with other people is a good thing as it
reduces the amount of waste food that's left over.
A thing to expect is Freshers Flu! Its the time of year when the cold like symptoms come up and when its freshers week it spreads like wild fire!  So be prepared! Stock up on your cough syrups and paracetamols you will definitely get it at one point!

So Freshers week is definitely one of the most memorable times at university as well as your life! Enjoy it as much as you can, take lots of pictures and do as much as you can! Its the start of the best time of your life so go wild!

FRESHERS 2013

Last batch of GTA V Goodies!

So its only two days to go and I have done quite well resisting temptation to look at leaked footage and the map in detail! I can wait for it now! Tomorrow will probably go extremely slow to make the wait longer but it is now so close. Being so close, Rockstar revealed the final few tiles off their Los Santos webpage. And here is some of the video content. Check out the full info at www.rockstargames.com/v

Information was released about their 24 hour convenience stores including the return of 247 supermarket, Robs Liqueor stores and Limited service stores.

There was this advert for Los Santos sight seeing tour:

Along with information about properties, an advert was "brought to you" by My Blain County.
Now the graphics in this look absolutely amazing and you learn a little bit more about other extra activities available in the game, including jet skiing, darts and pool. Plus the whole area of Blaine County looks fascinating!

Amazing! So lets get through this last day or two and good luck with the game arriving on time if you have pre-ordered! ENJOY!!!

Autumn Storm Season starts in the UK

Well it looks like our lovely summer weather has well and truly dissapeared, as this weekend sees the first Autumn Storm of the season.
The Met Office has issued an early weather warning for strong winds and heavy rain across the British Isles over the weekend with severe gales expected on Sunday.
Northern Areas will see wind speeds of up to 50mph after a deep area of low pressure makes its way from the atlantic.

Pressure charts show squeezed isobars meaning strong winds Sunday. BBC

Showers are expected through the weekend with more persistant and heavy rainfall for Scotland and Northern England with Cumbia expected to see 60mm on Sunday. Temperatures will stay around the mid to low teens but with a strong wind it will feel cooler. There is also another depession brewing behind ready for next week. The start of the more stormy weather follows one of the hottest and sunniest summers for seven years.

Jetstream is well and truly over the UK this weekend NetWeather

Britains first "Autumn storm" comes at the same time as the unusually late, first Hurricane of the 2013 Hurricane season. Humberto became the first storm to reach Hurricane force on Wednesday though it was expected to weaken as it neared land.

New film to expand JK Rowlings wizard world

Warner Bros is expanding JK Rowlings wizarding world with talks of a new film! They have announced that the film will be neither a prequel or sequel to the Harry Potter films and would not star any of the characters. It was a matter of time before plans for further films delving into the magical world but this is very exciting news.

The film will take inspiration from JK Rowlings spin off book Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them both a physical book and fictional Hogwarts School Book. The textbook  details magical creatures from Harry Potters Universe and has a fictional author, Newt Scamander who is to be the main character in the new film.

The film will be written by JK Rowling herself in her first go at screenwriting. Rowling said, “the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realised by another writer was difficult… As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros." TotalFilm

She has made it clear that this only has connections to the magical world and not to the story of Harry Potter, "The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”

Bates Motel

Tonight see's the start of another highly anticipated new show in the UK. There have been great reviews from the US about this show and it is definitely worth a watch. Created by LOST producer Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin and Anthony Cipriano the show is a contemporary prequel to the 1960 film and book Psycho and depicts the life of Norman Bates and his mother Norma prior to the events portrayed in Hitchcocks film.

The show kicks off after the death of Normas husband and she buys her own Motel so she can start a new life with her son Norman. The show stars Vera Farmiga who has recently starred in horror The Conjuring as Norma and British born star Freddie Highmore as Norman (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Spiderwick Chronicles.) The story follows a series of events at the motel that leads up to Norman being a serial killer in the film Psycho.

The show is ten episodes long and starts tonight (12th September 2013) at 9pm on Universal Channel. (Sky Channel 113, Virgin Media 137.) It has also been renewed for a second season.

Spot the LOST Star:
Nestor Carbonell plays the Sherriff of White Pine Bay and also played never-aging Richard Alpert in LOST.

The plot is still unknown, but rumours are spreading that their is a new park built on another island setting the franchise as Jurassic World than singularly park. However, who knows it might be a time when dinosaurs roam the Earth once more!

This comes on the same date that Pirates of The Carribean 5 has been pushed back to 2016.

How would our country cope in the event of a cyber attack?
When the lights go out...... and there is no way of knowing when they will come back on.

Brand new Drama-Documentary, BLACKOUT starts tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.

The show looks into ways the government and police bodies would cope in the situation of a cyber attack and whether the citizens would stay civilized.

Combining fictional scenes with footage recorded during real blackouts.

Bastille in the BBC R1 Live Lounge

Bastille have returned to the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge today and done an epic cover along with their current single "Things we lost in the fire." Both were sung excellently live but the cover was definitely the talking point!

The group did a cover of Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop feat. a twist of her father Billy Ray Cyrus' song "Achy Breaky Heart," all on backing music which sounds a lot like "Lose Yourself" by Eminem at the beginning.  Definitely a favourite live lounge, they sure know how to do a good cover!

Last time they were in the Live Lounge they did a great cover of Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven

New GTA V Goodies

However, it has been predicted that the game will generate sales of £1billion in the first year alone!

Did you know that most of the game is made in Scotland with Studio Rockstar North based in Edinburgh.

LOST Easter Eggs in Once Upon A Time

So as it is the final episode of Season 2 tonight here in the UK and its almost time for Se3 in the US, I thought I'd take a rundown of all the LOST Easter Eggs found in Once Upon A Time, so far.  The show is written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz who also wrote a lot for LOST and it is definitely seen in the storyline twists and turns along with the whole flashbacks and their whole side stories.

Since the very first episode there has been LOST references:

Fictional items:

There is a whole lot of Geronimo Jackson, stickers, ipod cases and T shirts seen throughout of which is a fictional band seen a lot in LOST.

Apollo Bars are seen on numerous occasions, seen in convenience stores, amongst the characters and are also heavily featured in LOST.

Exposé is advertised on the television in the hospital where Belle is (Se2). Exposé is the name of a fictional TV show in LOST.

In Se1 episode "The Stranger" Pinocchio sees a plane fly overhead, this has the Oceanic Airlines logo on it. Oceanic Airlines is the plane the crashed on the island in LOST!

In Se2 episode "Tiny" when Henry, Emma and Mr Gold travel to New York they travel on a plane. All LOST fans were awaiting to find out whether it would be Oceanic Airlines only to be overjoyed and surprised that it was Ajira Airways! Another plane company in LOST!

Emma and Mary Margaret have some MacCutcheon Scotch Whiskey a brand featured on LOST and seen throughout OUAT including Se2 finale.

Similar Lines:

The Evil Queen, upon being told the battle is lost, says, "Don't tell me what we can or cannot do!" a spin on the line often repeated in LOST.

When Regina asks Rumplestiltskin to bring Daniel back from the dead, he replies "Dead is dead" a reference from LOST spoken by Benjamin Linus along with the entitled episode.

Leroy refers to everyone as "sister", which is similar to Desmond calling everyone "brother".

Sheriff Graham wakes up in the middle of the night because of a dream, which is actually a memory. He says to Regina, "It didn't feel like a dream. It felt like a memory." Similar wording to that Desmond, who says to Penny, "It wasn't a dream, Pen. It was a memory." in LOST.

Actors:

Charles Widmore (LOST) played by Alan Dale plays King George in OUAT
Hurley (LOST) played by Jorge Garcia plays Tiny in OUAT
Claire (LOST) played by Emile De Ravine plays Belle in OUAT

Naveen Andrews who plays Sayid in LOST has been confirmed to star in Once Upon A Time in Wonderland!

Storylines:

Belle played by Emile De Ravine loses her memory as she crosses the town line. In LOST there was a period of time during Season 1 when Claire was captured by "the others" she returned to the camp with no memory of her time there. Eventually her memories returned, Belles memories returned in the Se2 finale after a magical potion restored them.

The whole idea of a failsafe at the end of season 2 is similar to that in LOST when Desmond turned the key after they damaged equipment in a possible "world saving" underground bunker.

The wormhole in Se2 in which Baelfire ended up falling down after a dramatic and emotional goodbye from Emma, was very similar to the Sawyer - Juliet goodbye scene.

Numbers:

LOST numbers 4, 8, 15, 16 ,23, 42 and additionally 108 and 815 are seen throughout the show.

Se1 Ep1 Henry gets off the bus at gate 4. Emmas room is number 4.

Henry and Regina live at 108.

Clocktower frozen at 8:15.

Time references to 8:23, 8:15 and other number combinations.

108 boxes of hearts the queen has.

Number 8 room of Tamara and Baelfire

Astrid tells Leroy that the nuns only sold 42 candles.

Storybrooke's zip code is 04815.

Big Ben in London has the time 8:15

Other LOST Easter eggs:

In Season 1 a scene began with the opening of Emmas Eye. LOST did this on many occasions.

Damon Lindelof is the voiceover man for TV shows seen in Storybrooke! Damon Lindelof was one of the LOST Producers.

They were some of the main ones but there are many many more.

I LOVE THE LOST REFERENCES COMBINES MY TWO FAVOURITE SHOWS BY MY TWO FAVOURITE WRITERS! I HOPE THERE ARE MANY MORE :)
