130 vehicle crash on Kent Bridge

Dozens of people have been hurt, several seriously after a huge pile up on the New Sheppy Crossing because of thick fog. Firefighters had to free several drivers from their cars after they were pinned in by lorries and other vehicles.

Visibility was thought to be very poor with some drivers not adapting to the conditions, reducing speed and using their fog lights. Witnesses describe the devastation as horrendous with the incident occuring for more than 10 minutes as cars approached the accidents. The crossing is expected to be closed for the rest of the day. The front of the crash happened at the point where traffic was coming off the bridge, meaning the accident was across the majority of the bridge. There was also incidents in the other direction.

The bridge, 0.75 miles long is 115ft high at its peak and it must have been very frightning for drivers in the incident being pinned along the barrier by wagons at this height!
