Worst Storm surge in 60 years threatens the East Coast after huge Winter Storm

A huge winter storm has caused devastation across parts of Northern Britain. Gales of up to 100mph have battered Scotland early this morning with heavy rain. Flooding was a problem in areas affected by the heavy rain but coastal flooding has been the main concern with areas in the North West of England, Wales and Scotland having large waves causing some flooding. A man has died after his lorry was swept on top of other vehicles and other people have been killed from falling trees and debris.

Many bridges and roads have been closed after other accidents and strong winds and the entire Scottish Rail Network ground to a halt after trees blocked lines and damage to stations. Thousands of people have lost power across the North England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The worst may still be yet to come as 9000 people are being evacuated from Great Yarmouth as the coast is being threatened by the worst storm surge in 60 years which has been predicted as strong winds and high tides. Areas from North Norfolk right down to Kent have been given severe weather warnings and there are shelters being set up with sand bags available also for the possible flooding. They believe that the area will be affected for the next 36 to 48 hours with tomorrows tides also possibly being affected. Over 40 severe warnings, the highest warning, has been given from the Environment Agency.

So its pretty wild out there, its only been getting worse here over the last few hours as I am on the East coast about 12 miles from Great Yarmouth, luckily for me the coast here is cliff-face and won't be affected by tidal flooding but surrounding areas possibly. We will see in the next few hours! It was definitely a wild drive home from work!
