Any sign of summer?

So we had a few brief days at the start of May when we had some summery weather with temperatures up into the high teens and low twenties for over a week in places. The hottest day of the year so far saw temperatures reach 23.3C on the 7th May but this week we have had some very different weather, with violent thundery downpours and today a deep low pressure has brought heavy rain and wind across southern parts of the UK. But as we are reaching the halfway point of May are we going to see any change?

Well the weather for the rest of May looks a bit bleak with temperatures lower than average. In places tonight as the low pressure moves northwards the temperature may be cold enough to produce some more wintry weather across the Pennines!

The position of the Jetstream is right across the UK at current which is lower than it should be which has seem to be the trend since the start of the year. In places we are experiencing more April weather, with heavy April like showers. This means that there are several low pressure systems piling in across the UK for the near future. High pressure is believed to begin to build towards the start of June, however it is forming over Scandinavia which at first means that winds will be coming from a cooler direction meaning that temperatures are expected lower than average. However, it also means dryer and brighter conditions.

The best situation for warm and dry weather is when high pressure builds across Continental Europe when winds are from a Southern direction. Normally when high pressure is in charge it stays around for sometimes 2 weeks!

So expect no signs of summer just yet! Expect wet and windy weather with blustery, stormy showers and possibly another batch of flood warnings.
