Copahue volcano: Red Alert

Authorities in Chile and Argentina have issued a red alert for areas close to the Copahue volcano which means that the volcano is predicted to erupt imminently. Some 3000 people have been evacuated from the areas, which are in a danger area surronding the volcano.

Volcanologists have been studying the volcano and have seen numerours precursors to a large explosive eruption. The 2,965m (nearly 10,000ft) volcano has only given off gas so far, but thousands of minor earth tremors have been registered in the area showing fracturing rock as magma rises and pushes upwards. A red alert was also issued last year in this region after Copahue began spewing ash and gas high into the atmosphere.

The Copahue volcano is one of many volcanoes in this area, along the Andes mountains. It is one of the most active and man of these volcanoes can be very explosive and spew ou large quantities of ash and gas which have caused major problems for air travel in the Southern Hemisphere over recent years. This range of volcanoes comes from subduction of the Pacific Plate.
