The Winter of 2012/13

So its the end of February today which marks an end of winter in meteorological terms, but how different was this winter to our average winter months? Well this month it was slightly colder and slightly wetter than average but on the whole it was not a significantly different from average. December was mild with numerous weather systems ploughing into the UK which caused numerous floods across many parts of the UK resulting from the wet year. From mid January it became colder and drier with some significant snowfall. The Lowest temperatures reaching -13.6C at Buntingford on Jan 16th and the highest at Hawarden on Jan 29th with 14.5C. High pressure covered the UK across the majority of February meaning it has been rather cold and dry, infact February being drier than average. The winter has also been slightly duller than average and 0.4C lower than average. There has been periods of significant snowfall also, with many parts of the UK seeing a covering at some stage and with the MetOffice releasing its first Red Warning for Snow in a part of Wales. Yet overall, the winter has been relatively average but with some events which have been a little more wilder. Yet who knows if winter has actually ended yet, last year there was snow in March/April time.
